the republican party is planning on addressing just yet. based on what happened in ohio today, this might not be a problem that the republican party recognizes is a problem just yet. how long can they continue like this? now on first look, temperatures in washington are simmering over details surrounding the 9/11 terror attack in benghazi as president obama stands up for his u.n. secretary against scathing criticism from republicans. all that while embattled former cia director david petraeus prepares to testify on capitol hill today. and breaking news from the middle east. as rockets are fired between the israelis and palestinians, this morning three israelis are killed. we'll have a live report coming up. first, good morning, everyone. i'm lynn berry. today, one scandal will give way to another in washington. david petraeus expected to testify in a closed door senate
5:01 am
intelligence committee hearing. general petraeus is not expected to talk about his personal indiscretions that ended his cia career last week. instead, he'll be discussing details in the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya that resulted in the death of christopher stevens and three others. also, the controversy over u.n. ambassador susan rice calling the assault spontaneous in september reached a boiling point. yesterday president obama and his first news conference since re-election exploded at republicans finger pointing over rice. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she had received and besmir much her reputation is outrageous.
5:02 am
>> earlier, senators mccain and graham slammed rice vowing to stop her rumored nomination as secretary of state. >> i don't trust her. and the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better and if she didn't know better, she shouldn't be the voice of america. >> we'll do whatever is necessary to block the nomination. >> all right. so back to petraeus. "the wall street journal" reports he was already at odds with his boss national intelligence directsor james clapper after petraeus wanted the cia to fight back publicly against criticism for its role in benghazi. and we also have new details this morning on the personal scandals that have enveloped petraeus and john allen from nbc's andrea mitchell who broke this story. >> reporter: at his news conference, the president went out of his way to praise petraeus. >> he has provided this country an extraordinary service. we are safer because of the work that dave petraeus has done. >> reporter: as paula broadwell remained in washington staying
5:03 am
with her brother and still not talking. officials say the investigation was triggered in may when general john allen received an e-mail from an account called kelly patrol. sources close to kelley warned the zwroen stay away from her, she could ruin him. general allen say pim close to jill kelley forwarded it to her on the account she shares with her husband scott thinking she sent it as a joke. sources say she told general allen she did not send it but was concerned she was being stalked or electronically hacked because the e-mail referred to a meeting that she and allen scheduled in washington for the following week. in june people close to kelley say she and her husband received four different embarrass from different accounts saying jill she is up to no good, asking her husband, do you know what your wife is up to when she has dinner with general petraeus. she turned over all the e-mails to an fib agent she knew, never realizing the impact they would have. people close to the kelleys say
5:04 am
that she never had an affair to general allen and they found no evidence to the contrary. but there was enough inappropriate language to launch an investigation. >> general allen is doing an excellent job at isaf in leading the forces. he certainly has my continued confidence to lead our forces and to continue the fight. >> reporter: the fbi continues looking through documents they took monday night from broadwell's home. but so far have found no evidence of anything highly classified. the pentagon suspended broadwell's security clearances and macdill air force base revoked jill kelley's pass to the base. overseas now, fears of a new war in the middle east are on the rise after israelis took out the top military commander of hamas in a ferocious attack yesterday. and just this morning the first israeli fatalities of the renewed conflict, three people killed in rocket fire from the gaza strip. martin fletcher is live with the latest on this.
5:05 am
martin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. israel's army warned of dangerous days ahead. difficult days ahead. and they're already difficult enough. today israel is continuing its attacks on gaza, still targeting hamas militant leaders and in particular over the last 12, 16 hours attacking stockpiles of long range rockets that hamas has been building up in gaza. that's what israel says this is tack is all about. stopping hamas from the ability to attack israel with the rockets. they say they destroyed many of the long range rockets which can target cities as far north as tel aviv. there is one report from gaza that the palestinians had fired a rocket at tel aviv but there is no confirmation of that. there was no news of it landing. one missile did get to the anti-rocket defense system and killed three israelis who apparently did not obey
5:06 am
instructions to seek shelter but were looking at the action from their balcony. the army is telling everybody in israel, do what you're told and then you'll stay safe. inside gaza, at least 13 palestinians have been killed, 100 wounded. israel is continuing the attacks not only from the air by the way but also from ships at sea. israeli troops are also poised on the edge of gaza and reserves are being called up, too, in case the operation becomes bigger and israel launches a ground invasion of gaza which israel says they do not. hamas does not want. but it is certainly a situation. >> martin fletcher there live in tel aviv. thanks so much. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking your weather. he has your forecast. good morning you to, bill. >> i'm all full of good news today. >> hey, wait a second. bill karins? what? no. impossible. >> that's what i say. i'll search for something bad. difficult today. good morning, everyone. 24 hours ago we had an amazing
